Paul Dietrich QuintetPaul Dietrich is a Chicago-based trumpet player, composer, arranger, and educator. Constantly absorbing music from a wide range of influences, Paul creates music that synthesizes the sounds of classic and modern jazz, Western classical music, folk, progressive rock and other diverse genres.
Improvisation has always been at the center of Paul’s musical universe. His musical upbringing – his father is a jazz musician and historian and his mother a pianist, both educators – had an immense effect on his development as a musician. The constant stream of new and varied music would also have a profound impact on Paul as he grew older.
Equally comfortable as a performer and a composer, Paul honed his skills by earning his Bachelor’s degree in Trumpet Performance and Jazz Studies from Lawrence University (2010) and a Master’s degree in Jazz Studies from DePaul University (2012). While in school, his primary teachers included Fred Sturm, Tom Matta, John Daniel, Bob Lark, Mark Urness, Lee Tomboulian, Ron Perillo and Bob Palmieri – all of whom contributed greatly to Paul’s development.
As a trumpet player, Paul has played in all sorts of formats and is an active freelance musician in Chicago and throughout Wisconsin. He has improvised as a soloist with the Lawrence University Jazz Ensemble, the DePaul University Jazz Ensemble, and the Chicago Jazz Orchestra. Paul also enjoys venturing away from the jazz scene and has performed in a variety of other ensembles including brass quintets, orchestras, wind ensembles and salsa bands.
