Vocalist Lila Ammons, releases her new CD “Genealogy” at The Dakota. The granddaughter of the legendary Albert Ammons and the niece of renowned tenor saxophonist, Gene Ammons, Lila Ammons trained in and pursued a career in opera but found her roots in jazz.
As Hodding S. Carter, II, once said, “There are only two lasting things we can leave our children: One is roots, and the other, wings.” Her upcoming CD entitled GENEALOGY will include Gene’s legendary “Canadian Sunset”, a tribute to Albert and Lila’s 21st century compositions.
From 2007-2018 she has toured extensively singing classic blues and boogie woogie in major concert halls and theaters (Vienna Musikverein, Orfeum Graz, Lustspielhaus Munich, Laeiszhalle, Hamburg, etc.), international jazz and blues festivals (Chicago Blues Festival, Salzburg Jazz Festival, Guinness Jazz Festival, etc.), theaters and jazz clubs (Pizza Express Soho London, Iridium NYC, Duc de Lombard Paris, etc.) throughout 12 countries. In the US she has performed in Chicago, New York City, Cincinnati, Ohio, Ann Arbor and Detroit, Michigan, Houston, Texas and Marshall, Texas. In 2015 Lila began reducing her classic blues touring to focus on the jazz music she truly loves. In 2016 she began receiving international invitations to perform as a solo jazz singer in England, Ireland, France and Spain.
Since 2007, Ammons has worked with numerous internationally acclaimed musicians such as, Axel Zwingenberger, Charlie Watts, Ben Waters, Jools Holland, Chris Jagger, Judy Carmichael, Sonny Leyland, Bruce Barth, Tony Sola and she participated in a five-city Brazilian tour with the Howard Alden Trio & Bucky Pizzarelli, Jon Faddis, Stacey Kent, John Allred and Judy Carmichael. In the Twin Cities, she performs with many of the area's top jazz and blues instrumentalists.
Ammons believes that “jazz is not a linear medium. It’s an organic system that changes, evolves and goes where it wants to go.”. A singer with a wide pallet, Lila honors the past and the present, and wants to continue following the path of jazz into its future.
