The Larry McDonough Quartet returns to the Twin Cities Jazz Festival to perform two sets, one classic acoustic and the other electric fusion.
Acoustic Set
LMQ will perform all of the recording Kind of Blue with improvisations over the original arrangements of So What, Freddie Freeloader, Blue in Green, All Blues, and Flamenco Sketches that has filled the Dakota over the last two years. But here is the difference: flutist Carol Bergquist takes the Miles Davis chair. If you have loved Flamenco Sketches, come hear it on flute. Larry McDonough, Richard Terrill, and Greg Stinson fill the Bill Evans, John Coltrane, and Paul Chambers chairs. LMQ will complete the acoustic set with other selections from popular shows of the music of Chet Baker, Tony Bennett, and Bill Evans.
Electric Set
LMQ will perform jazz fusion from Chick Corea and Return to Forever. Corea formed Return to Forever in 1972 as a vehicle for Brazilian jazz centered on the Fender Rhodes electric piano and featured Joe Farrell on saxes and flute. Return to Forever released two albums, Return to Forever and Light as a Feather, before reforming as a jazz-rock fusion band. Notable pieces included Crystal Silence, La Fiesta, Light as a Feather, 500 Miles High, Children's Song, and Spain. Larry McDonough listened to Return to Forever in high school and college, transcribing and practicing many of Corea’ solos to practice. Larry will take on the roles of Corea and Flora Purim who sang on the recordings. Carol Bergquist and Richard Terrill will present the two faces of Joe Farrell on flute and saxes. Bassist Greg Stinson adds Stanley Clarke to the mix. LMQ will complete the electric set with arrangements of Spinal Tap, Sting, Clapton, Led Zeppelin, and Prince.
